I was thinking the other day about games I remembered not necesarlly for their graphics but the atmosphere they created the story and the sheer goose bump creating moments..(now deusex is one of them but thats on steam to buy and well accessable, and requires an article all of its own im sure, these two games are not really available anymore unless you can find a iso copy on the net)

Firstly homeworld 1/2 I didnt know much about this pc game it was just another space RTS to me untill I installed it and witnessed full-on anime intros (in a digitally painted storyboard kinda way like alot of cartoons are done today)cutscenes and expert voice acting and an amazing soundtrack score going on .
I then gave the tutorial and first level a go and was hooked ,like i wanted to get those b****** Taiidan Empire for not wanting us to go back to our homeworld. Amazingly clean simple visuals and brilliant design, made this an unforgettable experience..

Also around 1997 few years before homeworld was Bladerunner (the game by westwood studios) .Already a fav film of mine so when I heard they were making a licensed game involving those ol’skool point & click mechanics (in the style of those classic lucasart games) I just had to get it!
And for the most part it was fun and very atmostpheric. So cool was it to be playing in the world of the bladerunner (although this was’nt as Deckard :( but a similar story arc with a different bladerunner named Ray McCoy with another ‘hunt the replicant” sidestory to compliment the film perhaps?as I understand it …)
With pre-rendered backrounds it was a treat for the eyes although pc graphics at the time were better than this , it still worked quite nicely ;As a narative based game with adventure/choose-your-path gameplay you didnt really need a full blown roaming-around-the-world-3d-engine like we are currently used too .You just point & click, read some backstory, watch some nice renders of the police headquaters or the apartments and sink into the amazing Vangelis score….

ive seen working fine on win7 in another youtube clip someone posted and already got homeworld running on a MBP win7 ,so retro pc gaming weekend here I come… now to think of some more games i played …hmm Out of This World (aka Another World)….

It is in this facility that the original movie negatives from the nearby Warner Bros. vault (in which films are kept at a brisk 45°) go digital. The “4K” refers to the 4,000 lines of resolution at which the movies are scanned – more than triple that of 1080p high-def. And for even more perspective: Your typical theatrical film tops out with a rez of 3K to 4K (few actually reach the 4K level).

def one of the best bluray examples in terms archive restoring and xtras given.. unlike avatar bluray which has nothing(admittedly it does look good already)

Needs more for fog though – maybe they could add more geisha neons too for v2 >? !

excerpt from project site:

“Approximately 7 feet past the window is a large single plane of wood with windows cut into it. The 7 x 11 foot plane of wood is actually two layers of wood with a ~1″ air gap where xmas lights are mounted to light up the inside. The front plane is thin (1/8″) and has the 1540 windows cut into it while the back plane of wood is 1/2″ sheets of plywood. The xmas lights (about 700 lights) are mounted behind the front plane so that the light bounces off of the plywood (back plane) to scatter the light so that pinpoints of light are not visible. The models of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings consist of multiple layers in order to simulate the effect of having lights shining on their own roofs.

Most of the display is painted in light grey latex paint for both weather-proofing and tinting of the light coming from the inside. However the front is painted dark grey to make it blend into the night sky above.”
